LightChEC Summer School 2024

The LightChEC Summer School 2024 took place from 9 to 12 September. In the seminar hotel at the beautiful Aegerisee in the canton of Zug, Switzerland 40 young researchers assembled for the fifth and last Summer School of the URRP LightChEC consortium. Participants from the University of Zurich, EMPA, and 15 from other Universities all over Europe were present and took part in interesting seminars, workshops, and activities.

The Summer School 2024 started with an insightful teaching session with Prof. Yogi Surendranath from MIT on polarization, followed by the first poster session, where the participants got to present their research and discuss it with their colleagues and the attending PIs. In the following days, we heard talks covering a broad range of topics from interfaces, electro-, and thermocatalysis over operando spectroscopy to large-scale production and storage of hydrogen and other sustainable fuels.
In two additional teaching sessions, we got to learn about ultrafast spectroscopy to analyze the photochemical and -physical reactions in organic materials as well as the interaction of hydrogen with metals. These workshops were taught by Prof. Natalie Banerji from the University of Bern and Prof. Astrid Pundt from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The penultimate evening of the event was rounded off with a second poster session.

Besides scientific discussions and research presentations, we enjoyed the lovely scenery of the Aegerisee with a boat ride and apéro. Some of us went for a bike ride or hike around the lake, or a round of minigolf in the minigolf course nearby. The evenings were filled with chatting, piano playing, crafts, and an occasional dip in the lake despite the gloomy weather.
